Amaris

Amaris (also known as Frostfell, or Winter’s Hell) is a kingdom located deep in the northern oceans. It exists on top of a massive glacier formation, with the majority of inhabitants living directly in the main ice structure.

While not officially recognized as one of the major kingdoms, Amaris is revered for existing and thriving in such an inhospital enviornment. With heavy snowfall and storms, the kingdom spends the majority of the year isolated from the rest of the world, the poor weather conditions preventing safe passage.

Though known for many traits, Amaris’s popularity has predominantly stemmed from it’s overwhelmingly high population of ice sorcerers, with nearly 85% of all magic users having the affinity, a number that goes against the norms of every other nation.

Geography

[An anomaly of anomalies.]

The glacier that Amaris sits on is abnormally massive, to the point that it was initially believed to be an island of sorts. The kingdom is located roughly near the middle, currently occupying around ten percent of the surface.

Due to the lack of natural resources, all materials and supplies have to be imported from the warmer climates. This is most obvious in the architecture itself, almost all buildings built using blackstone due to being one of the cheaper and more reliable options.

Climate

No matter what, Amaris is cold.

However, it is not as cold as it should be.

For all of it’s known existance, Amaris (and the nearby area surrounding it) have had relatively calm weather. The warm half of the year is comfortable enough for most to spend several hours outdoors without any issue, while the cold half is tolerable enough to allow essentinal work to occur.

This climate stability occurs due to two factors:

  • Massive walls that block the strong winds. These walls section off the kingdom, built overtime as the kingdom grew.
  • Amaryllis— a goddess overseeing the kingdom— calming the weather itself.

History

The early days of Amaris are shrouded in mystery due to a lack of any real records. The prevailing theory is that the initial settlers were artic researchers that managed to find themselves on the glacier. This is supported by the notable climate stability, with the area around the kingdom’s glacier relatively stable compared to the others (an anomaly that has also been questioned and still not understood).

Military

With such an inhospital enviornment, Amaris hardly seems like a location to warrent any military infrastructure of any kind, yet the kingdom has opted for the oppsite, acting as a major exporter in ice sorcerers, and houses one of (if not) the most prestigious magic academics in the world.

Amaris’s “mercenaries-for-hire” system has raised a few eyebrows, due to working with most of the major kingdoms despite periods of less-than-favourable relations. In the past, this has been a notable point of tension, though most places have simply treated Amaris’s lack of alliegances as a blind spot.

Academy

Amaris has a magic academy. Due to the naturally cold weather, combined with the questionably high amount of ice sorcerers that are born, Amaris’s magic academy is heavily specialized for ice users.

Other affinities are uncommon, the other affinities only taking up 10% of the student population -. Of those, many come from temporary exchange programs that Amaris uses to help maintain relations with their allies.

-\Strangely enough, the non-ice students are relatively split between affinities, meaning that the rare chaos and ethereal maintain similar percentage populations compared to other nations.
