Magic Techniques and Quirks

Table of Contents

This page lists a bunch of magic techniques. They are not sorted in any real capacity, though most things here are beyond the basics, because the basics are boring and the complex stuff is cool.

This page is a ramble page, meaning it’s not really sorted in the format of a proper doc page.

(Well, most pages aren’t really properly written, but ramble pages are especially not guarenteed to be well quality also i can’t spell)

Threading

Spells must be performed by manipulating mana within or close to one’s soul. The hands are almost always used as the casting area for spells due to it’s natural intuitiveness, barring exceptions such as the legs or feet for mobility-based wind magic.

Threading is the act of creating strings of mana (threads) within the ethereal plane to use magic from a distance. It is a difficult technique to use effectively, and is seen as a risky move due to the high cost and focus required to maintain threads, but has certain niches where it shines.

Specifics

Threading, unlike standard elemental magic, is a technique that only occurs within the ethereal plane, making it difficult to train because of the lack of physical feedback. As such, it is a technique that is typically learned several years after training.

Use Cases

  • Threading is the reason why Earth magic can exist at all, as their users have an unnaturally high adeptness with the technique.
  • Hybrid earth users can use their threading skills in tandem with their other affinity.
    • An ice-earth hybrid affinity is the most potent use of this, allowing for incredibly potent long-ranged magic.

Weaknesses

  • The mana cost of threading multiplicatively increases with distance.
    • As an example with arbitrary numbers, a 1 meter thread will cost 1 point of mana per second, but a 10 meter thread will cost 100.
  • Because threading affects mana outside of one’s soul, it can be externally disrupted.
    • In other words, if someone’s physically close to you (within three meters), they can completely shut down your threads, even if your magic is significantly stronger.
  • Threading can be seen by those with ethereal vision. This can be an extreme liability if you are not aware the other person has it.

Puppetting

Controlling your own physical body using magic. Not to be confused with augmentation, which combines your physical strength and magic to empower your body—puppeting completely relies on magic.

This isn’t really a real ability, but at some point I do plan to give Lucien access to an ice amulet that is basically an ice affinity on steroids, and have him “reattach” his arm or something mid fight.

Mana Funneling

A high-risk, high-reward technique that works by overloading a sorcerer with mana into a spell that grows stronger the longer it’s charged up for.[1] Requires one caster of any affinity, and one or multiple sorceres with Ethereal and/or Chaos affinities.

While an extremely powerful technique in the right circumstances, the circumstances are so rare and the risk is so great that Mana Funneling is more theoretical than anything else. Human sorcers tend to have a natural safety mechanism where their souls are never stronger than their physical form, preventing them from harming themselves from spell overexertion. However, this is bypassed using mana funneling.

Triple Convergence

Triple Convergence is a spell combo that uses three sorcerers to create an overloaded lighting bolt. It requires three people.

  • Chaos user to extract as much mana within the vicinity
  • Ethereal user to funnel the mana into…
  • Lighting user, who will have to endure said overloaded spell.

In the lore, this is used once to instantly kill some powerful demon sorcerer thing that I have to fight, but it comes at the cost of permanent damage to the lighting user’s arm. Note on the arm thing, because the plan is for the lighting user to realize if they only use their hand to cast it’ll literally get destroyed infront of their eyes, so they have to use their whole arm to prevent that.

  1. Technically, you can use mana funneling for a normal spell that doesn’t scale with mana input…but then why would you use it in the first place? ↩︎
