Combat Analysis
In short, Rhyfelwyr on paper are a relatively dysfunctional party, due to their differing and often clashing fighting styles. This was apprant during the official formation of their party:
-
Lucien cannot fight. His only relevant combat trait is his knowledge on elemental magic and combat theory from classes he took in school.
-
Ja’el has been trained to fight in structured, experienced groups, specifically as a defensive vanguard to set up the rest of his team. However, the only person he needs to defend is Lucien, who he cannot reliably set up.
-
Eirlys’s has the traits (and has been trained) as a Champion— someone who fights best alone. In many situations, she is forced to fight with a fraction of her strength, or rush in for
-
Lucien had zero fighting experience when the party formed, his only notable combat quality being his formal education in elemental magic.
-
Ja’el has been trained as a knight, specifically as a defensive vanguard, but the only person he typically defends is Lucien, who has had no formal combat experience and does not fight in a style he is accustomed to. is a knight that is often forced to play a defensive position due to needing to protect Lucien.
-
Eirlys’s is a Champion— someone who fights better alone, meaning that in many situations she is often moderately-to-severely restricted in power, or forced to rush in alone to create distance.
-
Aladia is a resurrected weapon— effectively a blessed item that acts as a force multipler for the person she fights with. Unfortunately, that person is Lucien, who cannot fight.
-
Adelaide offers Eirlys a dual affinity combat style with wind, but the lack of any real lethality from wind magic makes it more of an escape/setup tool rather than a damage dealer— the latter in which the group is lacking.
These dynamics improve as they spend together, but Rhyfelwyr has always stood out as an strange mish-mash of adventurers that wouldn’t work with different people.
Act I
During the early days of the party, the sheer difference in raw power Eirlys had compared to everyone else meant that she could simply win fights by herself, without any assistance from the rest of the group. This rarely happened, but it created an oddly light atmosphere that contrasted the difficult realities of the world.
Lucien’s lack of combat experience was a notable problem around this time, although this was mostly circumvented through Eirlys’s fighting dominance. Without any powers, and a low amount of experience with handling any weapons, Lucien relied on Ja’el to protect him. This also gave him poor synergy with Aladia, who while still dealt powerful blows, was difficult to set up due to her full power requiring Lucien to swing her himself. Fortunately, that last issue was mangeable when fighting monsters, as Lucien didn’t have to think about “outplaying” his enemy.
Act II
As the group solidifed and became known public figures, the early problems that came from their fighting styles had been improved on significantly:
- While Lucien is still the weakest person on the team, the issues he used to cause have been largely circumvented through his (sometimes questionable) partnerships and deals— his borrowed powers, as he calls them. He also occasionally acts as the team’s engage/fight starter, much to the worry of the rest of his party.
- Aladia has learned to abuse her telekinetic nature, flying around the battlefield whenever an opportunity presents itself, or making one for the rest of the group. While this is a noticable depature from the raw power she had been known for, it has improved the strength of the group overall, specifically with her and Lucien, the both of them working alongside the other without even to communicate.
- Ja’el has gotten more comfortable fighting with such a small group, transitioning from the pure defensive role he was trained as, to a confident brawler that brusies as much as he blocks.
- Eirlys has maintained her role as the raid boss of the group, but has improved her elemental synergy, treating her wind and lighting magic as two parts of her fighting style, rather than two separate techniques she employs.
- Adelaide has not changed (mostly due to not being alive), but she had warmed up to the group overtime, acting as a real member instead of solely Eirlys’s partner.
